Suburb Overview

Lockleys is a suburb of the city of Adelaide, South Australia.

The area was subdivided for housing after being an area renowned for its market gardens and greenhouses. The Hank family held substantial holdings. The Hank brothers were footballers for West Torrens Football Club with Bob Hank winning a Magarey Medal in both 1946 and 1947.

The suburb is the home of the EDS request management and EDS credit services in the former John Martins bulk store on Pierson Street. Prior to EDS's conversion of the warehouse this was used as a storage location for the floats used in the John Martin's Christmas parade.

The area was subject to flooding by the River Torrens, which originally never ran out to Gulf St Vincent, until the Torrens Channel, named Breakout Creek, was cut in to replace and drain the wetlands, called "The Reedbeds." A large part of Lockleys is within a bend of the River Torrens.

Lockleys is home to the Lockleys Football Club who play in the SA Amateur Football League. The team boasts popular local voice-over artist Adam Morgan in its coaching ranks, along with magarey medalist Mark Naley as development coach.

Mellor Park on Henley Beach Road has a tall tree which is decorated each year as a Christmas Tree.

The local guide group is Lockleys Guides, and the local scout group was 1st Lockleys Scout Troop until it closed in March 2001.

Kooyonga Golf Course is located in Lockleys and has previously hosted the South Australian Open Golf Championships.

Lockleys is the home of the former Odeon Star, now Windsor, Lockleys Cinema, Henley Beach Road.

The area has several churches. St Richards of Chichester is the Anglican church, St Francis of Assisi is the Catholic Church and a former Baptist church, which is no longer in use. The area also had a Uniting Church on May Terrace, but this site was recently sold and a brand new state-of-the-art building was constructed on Sir Donald Bradman Drive in front of the Adelaide College Of Divinity in Brooklyn Park.

Lockleys is in the City of West Torrens local government area, the South Australian House of Assembly electoral district of Colton and the Australian House of Representatives Division of Hindmarsh.
