Doreen Suburb Overview

Doreen is a suburb of Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, 26km north-east from Melbourne’s Central Business District. Its Local Government Area is the City of Whittlesea and the Shire of Nillumbik. At the 2011 Census, Doreen had a population of 11,276.

Patrick Reid settled the area in 1844, calling it “Hazel Glen”. The Post Office opened on 8 December 1870 as Hazelglen and was renamed Doreen in 1895.

The area contains three private schools, a primary school, a community hall and a CFA fire station. The Laurimar Estate has a thriving shopping centre with two gymnasiums, several coffee shops, bakery, dentist, deli, a supermarket, a greengrocer, two pizza shops, several ATMS, two cafes, a fish and chips shop, an Indian restaurant, a hairdresser, newsagent, travel agent, podiatrist, dentist, doctor, pharmacist, clothes store and two community centres. Childcare is also available from ELTHAM College Kids on Flaxen Hills Road. Under construction are several more restaurants and takeaways including a Thai restaurant, a jeweller, a bookstore and many more.

Doreen is unusual in that the eastern portion in the Shire of Nillumbik remains rural, being contiguous with the rural localities of Yarrambat and Nutfield. The western portion in the City of Whittlesea is contiguous with the suburbs of Mernda and South Morang and suburban development has proceeded. Yan Yean Road separates the two portions.

Residential development is of two kinds

Doreen is very green and quite hilly and is surrounded by the foothills of the Yarra Ranges to the east and north and the forested banks of the Plenty River to the west. As part of it being on the urban fringe it has a wide variety of animal life including bird life. To the north is Yan Yean Reservoir, which is the oldest reservoir in Melbourne.
