The term “Realtor” is more commonly used in the United States, but in Australia, it is sometimes used informally to refer to licensed real estate agents who belong to a professional body such as the Real Estate Institute in their state. These memberships often require ongoing training, adherence to ethical standards and compliance with industry practice guidelines. However, the title itself does not guarantee superior performance, marketing skill or negotiation ability. Sellers should focus on the agent’s track record, suburb expertise, recent sales, communication style and ability to manage buyer competition. A professional agent who consistently delivers strong results is far more valuable than someone who simply holds a membership title. Understanding the distinction helps sellers choose based on proven capability rather than branding or terminology.
You begin researching agents to sell your home and notice that one describes themselves as a “Realtor” while others use titles like “Sales Agent” or “Licensed Real Estate Agent.” Curious about the difference, you ask each agent what their title means and how it affects their service. One agent explains that they follow strict professional guidelines as a member of their state’s real estate institute. Another agent focuses on their strong negotiation record and high number of suburb sales. After meeting all candidates, you choose the agent with the clearest strategy and best market insight, regardless of title. This decision leads to a highly competitive campaign and an excellent final sale price.
